Cotillion is not a new concept -- for decades, children in cotillion have learned basic etiquette, dance steps and respect for others. Today, cotillion and other etiquette classes are more popular than ever, as parents, educators and others who work with children realize the importance of what used to be dismissed as manners.

Social Education Becoming Mandatory

Jon D. Williams Cotillions knows that the skills students are learning reach much further than the dance floor. What these children are learning today -- self-assurance, civility, politeness, good sense -- is as important to their education and future as the math, science and language classes they take in school. Based on the fact that the United States Air Force Academy makes the Jon D. Williams Cotillions social education a required course for over 1,400 cadets annually, perhaps we're not wrong.

Skills You Can Use Your Entire Life

Our program is really social education. We teach dance, but we use dance as a tool, for teaching skills that we believe are as important as having a good understanding of science, or math.

The basics of social education -- how to interact, how to present yourself, how to show respect for others -- are skills you use your entire life.

Through cotillion classes, Jon D. Williams Cotillions emphasizes how being self-assured and well-mannered can help in a variety of situations. When we teach the cadets at the Air Force Academy, knowing how to act in a variety of situations is essential. In essence, they are ambassadors representing our country.

Consideration and respect for others is probably our most important lesson. And basic manners, that children once learned from their parents are often lost in the rush that families are feeling today.

Kids haven't changed as much as parents have. There is less communication between parents and children; simply, because our society forces us to spend less time with each other. When the communication breaks down so do our tolerances toward one or another, which is not conducive to anyone's well being.
